I'm excited and honored to be speaking on a panel on art and illustrated publishing this evening, hosted by the Bay Area chapter of Young to Publishing, held at our very own Chronicle Books offices, and featuring colleagues from several of the impressive illustrated publishers to be found here by the Bay (people tend to think all the publishing happens in New York, but they're wrong). of illustrated
books in the country. Gift books, cookbooks, licensed character
books, art instruction books, children’s picture books, museum books, photo
essay books—the Bay Area covers it all!
But how do these stunning books get made? What’s it like to work in-house as an
editor, designer, or art director on these astonishingly beautiful titles?
Where do publishers find illustrators and photographers to work on these books,
and where do those talented artists get their ideas in the first place? What
does it take to get a job in this corner of our industry? With such an amazing
assortment of publishers and projects at our doorstep, we’ve set out to answer
all of these questions and more at our first panel of 2018.
