there was that time
walking down the street
with a bunch of other
college kids after a play
on our way to a party
at someone’s apartment
through the cool dark
san francisco night
some I knew well
some hardly at all
there was gossip and an
unrequited love triangle
I was excited and
a little nervous
heading to my first
off-campus soirée
only years later
when I wonder
why this moment
stays with me
will I realize
it’s enshrined
in memory
because I was happy
